Coffee

Kenya Gethuwbwini AA (227g)

This Single estate coffee from just outside Thika in Kenya is a lovely example of what the top level coffees are about. The prized blackcurrant acidity is balanced by good creamy body. It has a lovely mouthfeel which gives it an easy drinking quality pretty much anytime of the day! Very elegant French press coffee, but I just love this in a moka pot! There is something wonderful about that natural acidity with syrupy texture of moka pot coffee!
Brazilian Cachoiera (227g)

There is a lot of coffee in Brazil! A lot of it is mass produced bland very average bulk filler coffee, but when the Speciality Coffee comes through, it can be a cup that everyone seems to recognise as, well that's what coffee should taste like! This is from a farm that has been owned the Carvalho Dias family since 1890 and grows coffee on 165 hectares. They have been real flag flyers for pushing forward the quality of Brazilian coffee and this coffee shows you they are walking the walk! When you grind it, there is a lovely waft of caramel in the air and the cup has a gentle hint of chocolate and nuts. I'd say it was like a Snickers bar in a cup, but you'd have to try some to see what I mean! This works in anything brewing wise, and is a great opportunity to see what espresso can do for a Single Origin coffee!
Nicaraguan El Quetzal (227g)

Speciality Coffee is potentially brilliant for Nicaragua, consider: Fair Trade price for coffee is about $1.26 a pound and this year a company from Japan paid $31.05 a pound for some of the highest rated speciality coffee in the country! Now we're not in a position to offer you that level of coffee yet, however we do have a really good example of what some farmers are aspiring to. This is from the Matagalpa region of Nicaragua and the farmer, Roberto Benda is really building on the success of his coffee by investing in lots of facilities on his farm to look after his permanent and seasonal workers.

It's a smoky, dense coffee that reminded some people of Marmite. So in that sense this is a character coffee that has a great bite with good heavy body and smoky sweetness.
